A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
