New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his intention to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by gentrification on how critical this election is,” Adams stated.
Adams continued, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention worldwide and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.
During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Months ago, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”
This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
