The English and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
