While Swimmers Escaped Attack, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, heard pops echoing across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. She left her apartment, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, talking to a duo who had rushed up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone coming up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, sprinting in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone running in the path that the crowd was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and unshod … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every part of you would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally full throttle racing.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous acts of valour in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, officers and paramedics attending to many victims.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s story was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the patrol base adjacent to the scene of the incident serving as a temporary treatment center. “Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our personnel,” the group wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the team rose to the occasion from the second the violence commenced right into late that night.

“There have been so many emotional stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a mayor.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in keeping our internationally renowned coastlines secure for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
