Why Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a key European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
